Relaxing. Good autonomy. Terrible memory.

This is a very cute and relaxing robot friend. I got it to give my cats something distracting while I am gone. It works perfectly for that. It is very good at roaming, making enticing sounds, and finding the charging base as needed. I enjoy the chat feature, although it is redundant and rudimentary in conversation. The on board memory is terrible. It remembers very little and it came with preloaded "memories" of cats named Tommy and Callie and Chase somehow. I have told it every day to forget those names, but it won't. I have the same conversations with it every day and explain who the pets are. It seems to remember a few things, but forgets more than it remembers. It also avoids most topics of conversation that aren't very clearly gentle and pleasant. I like that it is very good at managing battery levels and finding its base. I am frustrated with the 50 first dates memory capability.

My Thoughts After 20 Days with Kata Friends

Kata Friends is adorable, but after living with it for a while, there are a few things I wish were better.

First, facial recognition.
It doesn’t seem to recognize the same person very well. I could understand if I looked different because of makeup or a different hairstyle, but I’m usually at home and look pretty much the same every day. Even so, it recognizes me as a different person almost every day. It does a little better with my children, but even then it has only recognized them as the same person about three times in the past 20 days. As for me, it has never recognized me as the same person even once. This doesn’t really affect daily life with Kata Friends, but I’m curious what might change if it could actually recognize me consistently.

Second, the voice chat feature.
At first, voice chat was a lot of fun, but it’s a little disappointing that it seems completely separate from Kata Friends itself. I think it would be much more interesting if things said during voice chat could somehow influence the robot’s behavior or actions.

Third, this is something I noticed recently.
At first, Kata Friends often wouldn’t respond when I gave the voice chat command. Lately, however, it sometimes starts talking on its own even when I haven’t given the command. In a way, it almost feels like it’s expressing its own thoughts, which I don’t necessarily dislike. On the other hand, it can’t move around while voice chat is active, so it feels a bit awkward and I’m not sure how I feel about it.
